One of the most beautiful places in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest national park in Croatia and one of the oldest national parks in southeast Europe. It is famous for its’ 16 lakes connected by stunning waterfalls and cascades. The lakes are the result of the confluence of several small rivers and creeks, which together with a few subterranean karst rivers form the river Plitvica. Centuries of sedimentation of chalk, abundant in the waters of this karst area resulted in formation of natural barriers called sedra, tufa or travertine. These barriers formed by the unique natural process decelerate and dam the waters, thus forming lakes. The park is open all year round and every season offers a different and unique experience of this natural wonder.
